🎭

Our Story

Founded in 2016 by director and writer Ishmael Siyabonga Gumede, Ishmasiya Discoveries was born from a conviction — that theatre is not entertainment, it is medicine. Starting as Enthrone Creative Arts in 2020 and evolving into the registered company we are today, we've grown from a community arts group into one of KwaZulu-Natal's most purposeful theatre companies.

🏆

Our Track Record

Selected for the National Arts Festival in Makhanda. Showcased at the Playhouse New Stages Fringe. Winners of a Best Writer Award. Our productions reach over 50 schools annually — from intimate school halls to national festival stages.

What Makes Us Different

We use Applied Theatre — a proven methodology where drama is the vehicle for real dialogue, reflection and behavioural change. We don't come to fill a programme slot. We come to start a conversation that doesn't end when the lights go out.

🌍

Where We Work

Schools. Corporates. Churches. Government bodies. Festival stages. Community halls. Boardrooms. Wherever there's an audience that needs to be moved — we show up. Based in Umlazi, Durban, serving KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.

Whether it's a festival stage, a school hall, or a corporate boardroom —
we create theatre that stays with you long after the curtain falls.

NOW: THE BLEEDING DUST

🎭 BAT Centre, Durban · 2020 🏆 National Arts Festival, Makhanda · 2022 🎓 Umoba Arts Students Festival, UNIZULU · 2022 ✨ The Bleeding Dust · Coming 2026

Originally developed as a five-hander, Nonhlanzeko travelled from Durban to the prestigious National Arts Festival in Makhanda and the University of Zululand's Umoba Arts Students Festival. Now reimagined as an intimate two-hander titled The Bleeding Dust, this powerful work returns to the stage.

John The Baptist

⛪ Community Churches, KZN · 2021 🏆 Playhouse New Stages Fringe · 2023

Born in the sanctuaries of community churches and forged into something extraordinary, John The Baptist began as a five-hander and was developed into a raw, intimate two-hander performed with power and deep intention by Bongeka Mgobhozi and Khethukuthula Mthembu — two artists who gave everything to this work.

The stage, the white garments, the cross, the light — all of it became a vessel for something greater. Every production is a chapter. This was one of the most important ones.

Interrogation Room

🎭 Umsindo Theatre Festival · 2019 🏆 Count Me In Festival · 2019

A searing, unflinching work that put power, truth, and the human conscience on trial. Interrogation Room asked the questions that comfortable spaces refuse to ask — and demanded answers.

Performed at both the Umsindo Theatre Festival and the Count Me In Festival, this production announced Ishmael Siyabonga Gumede as a writer of exceptional power and social courage.

PUFF
DIFFERENT HIT, SAME HOOK

🏫 Ndasa Primary School · 2026 🏫 School Tour · KwaZulu-Natal · 2026 🏫 School Tour · KwaZulu-Natal · 2026

Written and directed by Ishmael Siyabonga, PUFF: Different Hit, Same Hook is a hard-hitting applied theatre production performed by Bongeka Mgobhozi and Mesuli Khomo for school audiences across KwaZulu-Natal. The play follows Thulani — a runner with everything ahead of him — and traces how vaping, amazeni (Xanax), and incika (drugs laced into drinks) take hold of his life one small choice at a time.

Three substances. One lie: that they are harmless. The production reached hundreds of learners across three schools in 2026, sparking conversation about peer pressure, substance use, and the people who are always watching out for us.
